About this piece

A large, vibrant and finely detailed early 19th century stained glass window after ‘The Mocking of Christ’; a 17th century oil-on-canvas painted by Flemish artist, Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641).

The painting depicts a scene from the story of the passion of Christ in which Jesus is stripped of his clothing, his hands are bound and a crown of thorns is placed atop his head.

A later 18th century colour print published by Haines & Son in 1795 after the painting by van Dyck can be found in The British Museum.

This stained glass is certainly a depiction of this print, detailing the same leering figures surrounding Christ. It includes a Roman commander placing the crown of thorns on Jesus’ head and a figure kneeling before him offering a reed. The reed is thought to symbolise a royal sceptre, mocking accusations that Jesus had claimed to be a King.

Beautifully detailed, this antique stained glass panel will make a stunning feature window in a property with its array of vibrant colours, expressive details and historical references.
